How the Super Heroes Club Bullying Prevention Program Works

The Program - Why Now

Our children are exposed to a continuum of violence everyday. We all know it happens - from a push in line when walking to the cafeteria or library, to physical assault in a hallway or bathroom. Our children can be the victim and simultaneously, the bully. Our school districts have blamed the epidemic of violence on race and poverty, referring to this as the school to prison pipeline. Our culture has blamed parental incarceration, exposure to domestic violence, and childhood sexual assault. We walk past our children like we walk past a homeless person sleeping on a bus stop bench - noticed but invisible.

The less economically advantaged child, moves from school to school as their family searches for their next inexpensive place to call home. These children, who are not in a position to form long term bonds with teachers and students, often have undiagnosed learning and/or emotional disabilities. As they begin to move into the higher grades, with fewer academic skills, their primary means of saving face, during a lesson they cannot comprehend, is to act out. They are deemed the trouble makers and that is where it begins. A child is labeled and that label will follow them throughout their school history. If they become involved in the juvenile justice system, school records become apart of that process. How can the most vulnerable of our society, a child without power over their race, familial poverty, or adult behaviors and behavioral consequences, ever win?

Super Heroes Power Club, co-designed with five fifth grade students, was developed to empower our most disenfranchised - our children. By incorporating resiliency skills into a character development platform coupled with reinforcing art activities, young Heroes gain easy and practical techniques that improve their inner and outer lives. The more Heroes on a campus, the greater their influence, sharply altering the culture of their school, family, and community.
